  5.          IBM ASYNCHRONOUS COMMUNICATIONS SUPPORT PROGRAM MODIFICATIONS

  13. The Tutorial provides self instruction on the modified and enhanced version
  14. of the IBM Asynchronous Communications Support Program.  The "Program Descript-
  15. ion" has provided you with insight into the additional capabilities that this
  16. program supplies.  The "Program Notes" provided you with information which was
  17. utilized in adapting and building your own version of the program.  I will
  18. assume that you have read both of these documents. I will also assume that
  19. the user is familiar with the basic operation of the IBM Personal Computer,
  20. and the original version of the Asynchronous Communication Support Program.
  21.  
  22. The Tutorial is grouped by functional areas.  Each new feature or function
  23. will be explored separately, each having its own set of steps or procedures
  24. starting with number 1.  If you cannot successfully complete a particular
  25. functional area, reload the program, enter terminal operation and begin with
  26. step one of the particular functional area in question.  If you continue to
  27. have problems, recheck procedures used in "Program Notes" to build the Asyn-
  28. chronous Communications Program diskette.  If you still have problems, feel
  29. free to contact me.
  30.  
  31. GETTING STARTED.  This portion of the tutorial will familiarize you with new
  32. features of the program which allow you start up immediately as a full duplex
  33. terminal and display various help menus and information.
  34.  
  35. 1.  Place the newly created program diskette in disk drive A.
  36.  
  37. 2.  Turn on the computer, or if already on, depress CTRL, ALT, DEL and load/
  38.     run the program.
  39.  
  40.     When asked to enter time and date, depress "Enter" only, bypassing these
  41.     entries for demonstration purposes.
  42.  
  43.     After a short wait, you'll see the program title centered on the screen,
  44.     and beneath it will be the question "Bypass intermediate menus(y/n)?".
  45.  
  46. 3.  Depress "Y".
  47.  
  48.     The screen will now be filled with information.  At the top, is information
  49.     about what type of terminal mode you are in.  Next, is a Function Key menu
  50.     detailing use of the function keys and ALT keys.  Then, other information
  51.     is provided to get you started with Upload/Download files, and the Tele-
  52.     phone menu.
  53.  
  54. 4.  Depress function key F2.
  55.  
  56.     Now, a function selection menu is displayed.  You will notice 7 different
  57.     options.  The first selection returns you to terminal operation.  The sec-
  58.     ond, puts you into terminal selection mode.  The third, allow you to temp-
  59.     orarily stop the program execution and perform other tasks such as listing
  60.     the program.  Deleting old files using the "KILL" command may also be per-
  61.     formed. (Notice that normal return to the function selection menu is acc-
  62.     omplished by depressing F5 instead of the old method of having to type
  63.     "CONT" and "enter". Don't do that for now, however, proceed to step 5.)
  64.     The remaining selection options will be discussed later.

  66. 5.  Depress "3" and "enter".
  67.  
  68.     You will now be temporarily in BASIC.  Type "Files" and depress "enter".
  69.     A listing of all files will appear on the screen.  Normally, you would
  70.     return to terminal operation by depressing F5.  However, for demonstration
  71.     purposes, continue with step 6.
  72.  
  73. 6.  Type "RUN" and "enter".
  74.  
  75.     Now, you're back to the beginning of the program.  This time instead of
  76.     answering "Y" (yes) to the "Bypasss intermediate menus(y/n)?", proceed to
  77.     step 6 and see what is available as terminal options.
  78.  
  79. 7.  Depress "N".
  80.  
  81.     The terminal selection menu is now displayed.  The 64K version has only
  82.     three options available.  The 96K version has 6 options available.
  83.  
  84. 8.  Depress the number corresponding to the Personal Computer Terminal option
  85.     and "enter".
  86.  
  87.     A list of terminal selection options will now be displayed.  Two additional
  88.     items have been added to the list.  A display selection option is avail-
  89.     able, and a Modem dialing option is available.
  90.  
  91. 9.  Depress the number corresponding to the "Return to terminal selection menu"
  92.     and "enter".
  93.  
  94. 10. Depress the number corresponding to the "User Specified Full Duplex Ter-
  95.     minal" option, and "enter".
  96.  
  97.     A list of terminal feature options will be displayed.
  98.  
  99. 11. (Optional, for users with both color video monitors and the monochrome
  100.     display.)
  101.  
  102.     Depress "11" and "enter".
  103.  
  104.     A choice of displays will now appear.  Depress the number corresponding
  105.     to the desired display, and "enter".
  106.  
  107.     You will now return to the function selection menu, still on the same
  108.     display.  The newly selected display will not become active until returning
  109.     to terminal operation (selection 13).
  110.  
  111. 12. (Optional, for users with a Hayes Smartmodem.)
  112.  
  113.     Depress "12" and "enter".
  114.  
  115.     A choice of dialing options will be displayed.  Depress the number corres-
  116.     ponding to the Pulse Dialing type, and "enter".
  117.  
  118.     You will now return to the function selection menu.
  119.  
  120. 13. Depress "13" and "enter".
  121.  
  122.     You will now be back in operation as a "Full Duplex Terminal". Please
  123.     note that on the bottom line the message "F5=HELP" is displayed. To the
  124.     right of that message is a blank.  The AUTO DIAL demonstration will have
  125.     you enter time and date, filling this blank space.
  126.  
  127. 14. Depress F5.
  128.  
  129.     The Function key help menu will now be displayed on the screen. You may
  130.     display the help menu at any time during terminal operation, however,
  131.     data displayed at the bottom of the screen will be pushed up, and data
  132.     previously at the top of the screen will no longer be displayed.

  135. AUTO DIAL AND AUTO LOG-ON.  This section of the tutorial will demonstrate
  136. the telephone dial up menu, auto dial feature (if using a Hayes Smartmodem),
  137. and the auto log-on capabilities of the program.
  138.  
  139. 1.  Depress CTRL, ALT, DEL  and load/run the program.
  140.  
  141. 2.  Enter current DATE when asked.
  142.  
  143. 3.  Enter current TIME when asked.
  144.  
  145. 4.  When asked if you wish to "Bypass intermediate menus(y/n)?", depress "Y".
  146.  
  147.     You will now be operating as a Full Duplex Terminal.
  148.  
  149. 5.  (If using a Hayes Smartmodem, disconnect the line from the modem to the
  150.     telephone jack before proceeding.)
  151.  
  152.     Depress F8.
  153.  
  154.     If only one telephone number has been entered into the program, then
  155.     your Smartmodem will begin dialing the adapted telephone number, and a
  156.     message will appear on the screen indicating which company is being called
  157.     via which telephone network.  If a Smartmodem is NOT being used and only
  158.     one telephone number has been adapted, then you will observe instructions
  159.     telling you to dial that telephone number.  (You need not dial the number.
  160.     Smartmodem users should wait until "NO CARRIER" is displayed if the above
  161.     applies to you and proceed to step 7.)
  162.  
  163.     Otherwise, a telephone dialup menu is displayed.  The format of the menu
  164.     is as follows:  Selection #, Company, telephone number, City which the
  165.     phone number is located in, and telephone network used.
  166.  
  167. 6.  Depress 1.
  168.  
  169.     If using a Smartmodem the selected number will be dialed by the Smartmodem.
  170.     If not, the selected number will be displayed asking you to place the call.
  171.     (Smartmodem users should wait until "NO CARRIER" is displayed.)
  172.     During normal operations with the telephone cable connected to the Smart-
  173.     modem and a "CONNECT" is printed on the screen or the connection is made
  174.     manually, you would now proceed with a standard sequence of entries to
  175.     log-on to the network.  The sequence is different for each computer net-
  176.     work and telephone net.  For this reason, even the NON-Smartmodem user
  177.     should utilize the telephone menu to insure the correct automatic log-on
  178.     procedure is selected.
  179.  
  180. 6.  Depress F8.
  181.  
  182.     The first in a series of log-on enteries will be executed.  Continue to
  183.     depress F8 until a "beep" is heard.  You will now observe a series of
  184.     entries on the screen which should represent the log-on procedures nor-
  185.     mally typed in manually.  You should utilize the F8 key in this manner
  186.     each time you are asked by the host system to make a log-on entry.
  187.  
  188. 7.  Depress F3.
  189.  
  190.     Now a message should be displayed in the lower left corner of the display
  191.     notifying you to use ALT H and that you have made an error.  This means
  192.     that you cannot execute the last F8 key entry without first depressing
  193.     another key.  This will be explained in a moment. Proceed with step 8.
  194.  
  195. 8.  Depress and hold "ALT" while depressing "H".
  196.  
  197.     A telephone/log-on help menu will be displayed.  This details the use
  198.     of other keys used in conjunction with the F8 key.
  199.  
  200. 9.  Depress the cursor left key (numeric 4).
  201.  
  202.     Depress F8 and observe that the last log-on entry made has been repeated.
  203.  
  204. 10. If using the Smartmodem, Depress END and then F8.
  205.  
  206.     You will first observe the letters "DISCONNECTING", then "+++", "ATH" and
  207.     "OK" on the screen.  (Don't confuse the "OK" sent by the modem and the
  208.     "Ok" used as a BASIC prompt.  If you'll notice, the BASIC prompt has a
  209.     capital "O" and a lower case "k".)
  210.  
  211.     The requirement to use the "END" key prior to using F8 was implemented to
  212.     prevent accidental disconnecting of the telephone line.  Use of F8 after
  213.     completion of the LOG-ON function without use of the end key will result
  214.     in an error message being displayed on line 25.
  215.  
  216.  
  217. Your F8 key may now be used to call up the telephone menu again without de-
  218. pressing any other keys.  If at any time during the log-on sequence you get
  219. disconnected and wish to return to the telephone menu, simply depress "HOME"
  220. and then F8.
  221.  
  222. UPLOAD and DOWNLOAD.  This section of the tutorial will demonstrate the use
  223. of the Upload and Download functions.  Upload provides the capability to
  224. transmit data stored on disk over the telephone line to the Host computer.
  225. Download provides the capability to store incoming data on diskette for later
  226. printout.
  227.  
  228. 1.  If starting or restarting the tutorial with this section, depress CTRL,
  229.     ALT, DEL and load/run the program.  Enter terminal operation and then
  230.     proceed to step 2.
  231.  
  232. 2.  Depress F2.
  233.  
  234.     The function selection menu will now be displayed.  Menu items 1 - 3 were
  235.     covered in the first section of the tutorial.  Selecting menu item 4 will
  236.     allow you to open a "Log File" for downloading.  Selection number 5 allows
  237.     you to open a file for Uploading to the Host computer.
  238.  
  239. 3.  Depress "4" and "enter".
  240.  
  241.     You will now be asked if you wish a list of files, and if so, to enter
  242.     the drive designator(s).
  243.  
  244. 4.  Depress "A" and "enter".  (For a dual disk drive system, insure there is
  245.     a diskette in both drives, then depress "AB" and "enter".)
  246.  
  247.     The files that are present on the designated disk drive(s) will be printed
  248.     on the screen.
  249.  
  250.     You will then be asked to enter the name of the local file to which you
  251.     wish to log.
  252.  
  253. 5.  Enter file name "TEST".  (In the case of a dual disk drive system, the
  254.     second disk drive may be designated by prefixing the drive to the file-
  255.     name. i.e. B:TEST.)
  256.  
  257.     Depress "enter".
  258.  
  259.     The function selection menu will again be displayed. Menu item 4 has now
  260.     been changed to "Close Log File: TEST" (or B:TEST).
  261.  
  262. 6.  Depress "5" and "enter".
  263.  
  264.     Again, you will be asked to enter disk drive designator(s) if you wish
  265.     a list of files.
  266.  
  267. 7.  Depress "enter".
  268.  
  269.     You will be asked to enter the name of the local file you wish to Upload.
  270.     Place the diskette which has the program modification named "MODS.BAS"
  271.     on it, into drive A.
  272.  
  273. 8.  Type "MODS.BAS" and "enter".
  274.  
  275.     The function selection menu will now be displayed.  Item number 5 has
  276.     been changed to "Close Upload file: MODS.BAS".
  277.  
  278. 9.  Depress "1" and "enter".
  279.  
  280.     You have now returned to terminal operation.  Note that on line 25, an
  281.     "L" is flashing and a "U" is present but not flashing.  This indicates
  282.     that both an Upload file and a Log file are open.  The Log file is active
  283.     and will record any input data, including characters entered via the key-
  284.     board, and echoed by the Host.  The Upload file is open but NOT actively
  285.     uploading data.
  286.  
  287. 10. Depress F10.
  288.  
  289.     The "L" flashing on line 25 has now stopped flashing indicating that the
  290.     log file is open but NOT actively logging input data.
  291.  
  292. 11. (Upload may only be adequately demonstrated utilizing the Hayes Smartmodem
  293.     or a similiar modem capable of a "loopback" test.  Instructions for the
  294.     Smartmodem are supplied.  To utilize other intelligent modems, consult
  295.     the owners manual.)
  296.  
  297.     To place the Smartmodem in a loopback state, type the following in caps.
  298.     ATS16=1A (and "enter").
  299.  
  300.     After "CONNECT" has been displayed on the screen, depress F9.
  301.  
  302.     Data from the "MODS.BAS" file will begin to be uploaded.
  303.  
  304.     The "U" on line 25 will begin flashing, indicating that the Upload
  305.     function is active.  You need not wait for the entire file to be uploaded
  306.     before proceeding to the next step.
  307.  
  308. 12. Depress F9.
  309.  
  310.     The "U" flashing on line 25 has now stopped flashing, indicating that
  311.     the upload file is open but not active.  Data will stop appearing on the
  312.     screen.
  313.  
  314.     To restore the Smartmodem to normal operation, Depress the "END" key and
  315.     then F8.  After a short wait, an "OK" will be displayed on the screen.
  316.     Now enter "ATS16=0" and "enter".  Reconnect the modular telephone jack.
  317.  
  318. 13. Depress F2.
  319.  
  320.     The function selection menu is now being displayed on the screen.
  321.  
  322. 14. Depress "4" and "enter".
  323.  
  324.     You have now closed the Log file.  Menu item 4 now says "Open Log file".
  325.  
  326. 15. Depress "5" and "enter".
  327.  
  328.     You have now closed the Upload file.  Menu item 5 now says "Open Upload
  329.     file".
  330.  
  331. 16. Depress "7" and "enter".
  332.  
  333.     You are now exiting the Comm. program.  You are asked "Are you sure(y/n)?"
  334.  
  335. 17. Depress "Y"
  336.  
  337.     You are now instructed to insert a DOS diskette in the default drive,
  338.     and depress any key when ready.
  339.  
  340. 18. Depress the Space Bar.
  341.  
  342.     You are now operating under DOS.  This would be the normal sequence of
  343.     events utilized after downloading data, such as electronic mail, etc.
  344.     Now that you are in DOS, you may use the TYPE command to display the data
  345.     on the screen, or you may utilize the COPY command and print the saved
  346.     data on the printer.
  347.  
  348. TUTORIAL COMPLETED.  You have now completed the tutorial, and are ready to
  349. utilize the program under normal operation.  I have covered the major new
  350. program features.  Please review the Program Description if more complete
  351. or detailed information is needed regarding a particular function.  If you
